Yeah, I think I'm leaning that way. I was thinking about freeBSD. Then I figured this is a business and RHE would just be another expense, and deductible. It looks like it's going to be Nick's primary focus. That's important. Does anybody know if there is going to be an upgrade path that doesn't require reformatting the HD?

For upgrade, I don't think there is an option, unless Nick et al pull off a miracle.

For anyone thinking a FreeBSD, remember it is not the same as RH, not everything works the same and there are some major command differences in how you use it.

Yeah, saw that...

My only thing so far, is the price of RHE, specially if you need support for more than one CPU...

I break it down this way ( for us at least)

On a single CPU it works out to $29/mth which is basically one account or 1/2 one account. Looking at that way it doesn't seem so bad.

Yeah, that is not bad... Hope it works out something good for us... for both single and dual CPU's

Hmm have I been taking this the wrong way then, I had thought that this was meant to be a follow on from the notice on their website under Platform Support Status

Quote:
Special notice about cPanel for RedHat: cPanel will continue to support the current versions of RedHat Linux through the end of their lifetimes. We are currently planning to support the new RedHat Enterprise Linux and Fedora versions before the end of the year. Once we have more information, we will post it here for your convenience.

I'm still hoping that cpanel will decide to support the old redhat and simpy release its own updates. They have mentioned the possibility to my data center.

No your right, as they say they will support old RH versions until EOL, the latest one being RH9 April 30 2004. My personal feelings though are for production servers to stay away from fedora and to move too enterprise if at all possible.

As for the possible need to have to reinstall for enterprise, this is when your NOC gets to earn their money and show you what they are made of. For example, I'm currently talking with our NOC on using "swing" servers, these basically are borrowed to house your clients while reinstalling the O/S and then moving them back.

For a NOC for experimenting with RHE, I know ours will probably do it for me, but they are not cheap. The servers are generally starting in the $800+ per month range.

Nah. If cpanel stops supporting rh9 after its eol, I'll be switching to enterprise more than likely.

I think that is a bit steap.. there...

Single CPU should be about $100 more
Dual CPU should be about $200 more
of course the datacenter could push just one version of RHE
